Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Sim-racing?

Sim-racing is a genre of video gaming that seeks to replicate real-world motorsport experiences as accurately as possible. Unlike traditional arcade racing games, which prioritize fun and accessibility, sim racing focuses on realism and the intricate details of vehicle dynamics and racing physics.

Key Features of Sim Racing
  1. Realistic Physics and Car Behavior: Sim racing games are designed to mimic the behavior of real cars on various tracks under different conditions. Players must understand complex variables such as tire temperatures, suspension settings, and track surfaces to perform well.

  2. Transferable Skills: The skills learned in sim racing can transfer to real-world driving. Many professional motorsport teams use simulators for driver training, as the precision of these simulations can closely mirror actual racing conditions. This makes sim racing a valuable tool for aspiring drivers.

  3. Community and Competition: Sim racing has cultivated a large and diverse community of enthusiasts. Competitions can range from casual races to highly organized leagues, allowing participants to race against others of similar skill levels. This competitive aspect is a significant draw for many players.

  4. Accessibility: Compared to real motorsport, sim racing is relatively affordable. Players can engage in racing without the high costs associated with maintaining a real race car, such as repairs and travel expenses

  5. Equipment: Sim racers use specialized equipment to simulate the feel of driving a real car such as direct drive steering wheels with force feedback, pedals with suspension and/or hydraulics, shifters, handbrakes, and much more, giving them a true simulated experience.

What Equipment Do I Need To Start Sim-racing?

What equipment do I need to start sim racing?
To start sim racing, you'll need a decent computer or gaming console, a racing wheel with pedals, and a comfortable seat. Additional accessories like a gear shifter, handbrake, and a sturdy mounting solution or cockpit can enhance the experience.

PC/Console

To start sim-racing, we highly recommend using a PC as you will have access to many more advanced features, racing simulator games, and ability to use more equipment which are not all supported on consoles such as motion platforms, haptic feedback, button boxes, etc. That being said, you can easily get started with a PS5 or Xbox and still have an amazing experience! Most PC’s in today’s market can run most simulators, however, more powerful PC’s are required when looking to equip multiple monitors, boost high graphics with enhanced realism, and/or race with multiple AI opponents.

Wheel Base

Next, you’ll need a direct drive base which is a high-end component in sim racing setups that connects the steering wheel directly to a powerful electric motor. This direct connection allows for superior precision, stronger force feedback, and enhanced detail, enabling racers to feel even subtle road textures and car behaviors. Direct drive systems offer extensive customization options for tuning force feedback characteristics, making them highly adaptable to individual preferences.

Wheel

You’ll then need to select your style of steering wheel. There are a few different types of steering wheels designed for different style of racing and sims; Formula 1, GT, Rally, Nascar, Go-Karts, Road Cars and even Trucking. These wheels all come in different sizes and provide different features such as displays, LED lighting, shift paddles, clutch paddles, buttons, rotary dials and joy sticks. Some wheels can easily be used for multiple styles of racing, however, for the best experience, we always recommend gearing up with the style of wheel which best suits your preferred style of racing. You’re always able to start with one “balanced” wheel and work your way up!

Pedals

When it comes to pedals, there are two variations you would need to choose from, either a 3-pedal setup which includes an accelerator, brake pedal and clutch or a 2-pedal setup which eliminates the clutch pedal. The type of racing you’re interested in will determine the style of pedal best suited for you. As an example, if you are determined to only play Formula 1 and GT titles, then a 2-pedal setup is perfect for you, however, if you’re also interested in driving rally, road cars, or truck simulators, and wish to drive manual, then we would recommend getting a 3-pedal setup to get the best experience.

Display/VR Headset

Choosing the type of monitor, TV or a VR headset will all be determined on your budget, if you’re using a gaming console, or how powerful of a PC you’ll be using. Please note, any size TV or monitor will get you started! However, for the best experience, we highly recommend starting with at least a 32-34” wide monitor, with a curved monitor being our go-to for better emersion. When it comes to monitors, there are a few things to look for; wide format, refresh rate, resolution capabilities, thin bezels (for triple monitor setups), and adaptive sync technology such as G-Sync & Free-sync. If you’re thinking of using a VR headset on a PC, please note that a good experience requires a powerful VR headset and a powerful PC to handle the graphics and processing power. For those looking to use triple monitors, please note that a powerful video card is absolutely necessary to power the monitors. The larger the monitor and higher resolution, the more power it will require. You are always able to tune down the resolution, however, even running triple 1080p monitors will still require a powerful graphic card to power. For those looking for a “sweet spot” standard monitors and triple monitor setups, we recommend going for an ultra-wide monitor such as a 49” with a 1000R curvature. This will provide great immersion, high field of view, and will not require nearly as much power as a triple monitor setup.

Frame & Chair

As you’ll be using a direct drive wheel base, we would only recommend aluminum extrusion frames as they are not only incredibly powerful and durable, but they are also modular meaning you’ll be able to design and customize your rig to your liking and not be confined to a single style. We source all of our frames from our partners at Advanced Sim Racing which come in several levels of durability; from the ASR1 which are used for more entry level direct drive bases to the ASR6 which is the most robust frame in the market, capable to withstand the strongest bases and heaviest loads which becomes very important as your upgrade your rig later on with additional attachments and accessories. Some things to consider when deciding on a frame; which wheel base are you going to use, are you going to add on a shifter and handbrake, and how adjustable do you wish the height of your pedals to be (important for those looking for a formula style frame). Our frames are available for children from the age of 4 to adults.

Accessories

There are many different accessories available for sim-racing, from shifters and handbrakes to button boxes, haptic feedback (feeling the car and its movements), motion actuators (for motion rigs), simulator fans, displays and much more. These accessories can always be added on afterwards and are not required to start sim-racing, however for those looking for the best experience right away, we would highly recommend selecting a shifter, handbrake and haptic feedback as these will provide the most immersion before evolving to a motion platform and other accessories.

How Long Does It Take To Get My Turn-Key Rig?

The duration can be as soon as 1 week and upwards to 6 weeks, depending on the availability of the items chosen as some specality items take long to deliver or can be out of stock due to demand. If there is a product, such as an added acccessory, which does not affect the build or play experience, but adds to the experience, we can install and deliver the rig and have the added accessory delivered once it becomes available.
